Redefining Beauty: Meet Tonya H.

Before Tonya found Trusst, she (like most women) was wearing the wrong size bra and struggled to find something that really worked for her body. She had read an article in Pittsburgh Magazine (Women in Business 2015) and discovered that there was a local brand, founded by women, that used engineering to design bras. She describes to us what happened next, “So I immediately found your website that wasn’t even set up yet - it just said “coming soon” - found the help email on there, emailed you and said “please can I help, is there anything I can do, let me help you guys because I was so excited about it”. So I went downtown and helped with a sizing event (at Alpha Lab Gear) - and we measured a couple of different ways because you were trying to figure out how best to help women coming into you figure out what size they were.” And the rest, as they say, is history.

Tonya is part of our Redefining Beauty campaign - challenging the traditional perceptions of what beauty is and what it stands for. To redefine beauty means to express yourself - however it resonates to you in your life.

What does beauty mean to you?

So, I think that in our current world culture, but especially in the US, beauty is synonymous with the “pretty.” I don’t care for the term pretty. I get so irritated - it’s SO superficial. Beauty to me - the people that I know - my daughter, my husband, men, women, it doesn’t matter - if you’re beautiful, it goes so much deeper than being pretty. It goes like, who you are, if you’re kind, if you’re fun, if you are helpful….kind of what’s inside of you, the way that it comes out makes you beautiful. It’s not the body your soul lives in. It’s SO much broader and so much bigger. But unfortunately, women have been told this - oh you have to be beautiful, you have to look a certain way, oh your eyebrows have to be a certain way, everything has to be a certain way, down to the most minute detail, when that has nothing to do with you are as a person. It has nothing to do with how you contribute to the world or how you show up in your kid’s life, or your husband’s life, or your friend’s life - or anything like that. It just is, it’s just so limiting. In my opinion, beauty is so broad and encompasses who you are as a person.

Why did you choose this spot for your photograph?

So, I’m an introvert, for sure, I thought about canceling this about 100 times (we’re glad she didn’t!). I just don’t usually put myself out there. And, we like to stay home. We like to stay home with each daughter, my husband. Unfortunately, we both work full time so that’s not something we get to do a lot, and so we really treasure the time that we do have together. I mean - we go out, but (as you know) toddlers are a pain in the ass to go out with. And so, we go out, but this is our home base. This is where we spend our time. We watch movies together, we color together, we play in her little kitchen together, this is where we spend all of our time. So for me, if I’m not at work, I would rather be here than doing anything else, because my favorite people are here.

What else do you do - what else builds your confidence?

I like to learn new things. I’m currently studying ayurvedic medicine. So I’m getting into that just like reading about it and kind of learning. It’s totally different than western medicine, like totally different. They talk about here are your doshas - these are the three main elements of what you are composed of - but then they also talk about astrology, which can come into it too...and then I’m like, this is not western medicine, this is not at all what I went to school for at all. So it’s really interesting. I love learning new things like that, and just kind of broadening - because I know that I don’t have all of the answers, about how your body works, there’s so much that’s not included just in our world view - there is stuff in Chinese medicine, there is stuff in Ayurvedic medicine - there are all these other facets that can explain things and I think its - again, the whole person thing. Previous to that, I was learning everything I could about photography. I just kind of glean onto something and learn everything I can about it for a while, and then I do something else. For a while, after I discovered how to actually measure myself for a bra, I was talking to everybody I could find about how - “you’re wearing the wrong size bra” - so I do the same thing for everything.

What is your favorite thing about Trusst and/or the products?

I love the products. I mean, I love them. I don’t have any other bras anymore that aren’t Trusst bras. And I can’t even wear underwire now. I put them on and I’m like - what is happening!? Why is this hurting? Because I’m just so used to it. I’m used to being comfortable. Which is not something I was used to before. And it’s not something, I mean, the design of a bra goes back 100 years? The underwire? And why has that not changed? Why has that not gotten better until you guys came along? I just think that’s phenomenal. And it’s changed my life  - honestly, I stand up straighter, I have better posture, I’m not going to the chiropractor every weekend anymore, I just think they’re incredible. Thank you!

Trusst was founded by women who challenged the traditional stereotypes of bra design - through engineering, physics, and product design that is not typically seen in the lingerie industry. However, that passion for challenge extends further than just through design; it resonates in the way you live your life as well as the way you perceive yourself and others around you.

We will continue to share stories of other women like Tonya who are redefining beauty. And we welcome you to share yours as well! Email us at or share photos and tag us with #trusstyourself and #redefiningbeauty and we’ll feature you in an upcoming blog post.

Thanks for all of YOUR support of our brand and mission - we wouldn’t be here without you.
