#SelfCareSaturday: How We’re Beating Stress and Practicing Self-Care this September

September can be a crazy month. In between back-to-school events, the return of Football Sundays, and the inevitable ramping up at work that occurs once the air cools off, September can feel both like a time of exciting change...and high time to run back to summer vacation.

At Trusst Lingerie, we make a commitment every day to creating innovative, high-tech D+ bras that help women feel beautiful and confident in their own skin. We want our bras to actually support you, especially as you work through a busy September.

We’re so inspired by your hard work -- AND we recognize that self-care is also essential to your health and wellbeing. In August, we began a series on our blog entitled #SelfCareSaturday, targeted at sharing some of our favorite ways to practice self-love at Trusst Lingerie. You loved these posts so much that we decided to make them a monthly event, so today, we’re bringing you four ways to practice self-love in September:


1. Nourish your body with stress-busting foods.

One of the best ways to fight stress and take care of yourself is to make sure your body is getting the nourishment that it needs. According to a representative from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, eating foods that are rich in antioxidants -- like leafy greens, berries, and other fruits and veggies -- may help to reduce stress by enabling your body to “fight stress-related free radicals.” Additionally, foods that are high in protein (like nuts, seeds, tofu, fish, meat, lentils, beans, and eggs) contain the amino acid trytophan; this amino acid helps to produce seratonin in the body, which will boost your mood and your overall sense of wellbeing. Examine your diet throughout September, and if necessary, add in a couple of these foods to beat your stress!


2. Reward yourself.

Even as you increase your intake of stress-busting foods, remember to treat yourself to a favorite meal or snack every once in a while. Recent research has shown that exercising self-compassion, which includes rewarding yourself for your achievements, enables individuals to become resilient and significantly impacts their overall wellbeing. It’s also important to note that there’s a clear distinction between self-indulgence and self-nurturing -- according to psychologist Dr. Leon Seltzer. Self-indulgence is linked to addictive behavior, nurturing and rewarding yourself is actually behaving in a “loving, respectful, and prudent” manner towards your body. So don’t be afraid to recognize and reward yourself for your hard work and achievements. You deserve it!


3. Stay organized.

One of our favorite ways to practice self-love and maintain our emotional wellbeing throughout the busy month of September is to make sure we’re staying organized. We’re always busy at Trusst Lingerie -- whether we’re dreaming up ideas for new products, responding to customer feedback, or releasing new collections like the Naomi -- and it can be easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of tasks that need to be accomplished.

We’ve found that the best way to combat this stress is to stay in control of what needs to get done. Clean up your workspace, and if lists work for you, then make a to-do list that sets out all of your goals/tasks. Organize this list in terms of priorities. Focus on one task at a time, and celebrate/check off each one as it’s accomplished. When things begin to feel impossible, step away from your desk to refresh your brain and your body. You’ve got this!


4. Get inspired by fall.

You may be someone who loves the summer heat and relishes the sunshine, meaning the arrival of September also brings with it the dreaded return of chilly weather. However, fall can be a real inspiration; it brings with it changing leaves, a new buzz in the air, and the return of delicious fall-themed foods. And even though the season is often brief, it’s important to savor its beginnings this September!

Set aside a work-free day this month to devote to a fun fall activity and get inspired by the new season. Visit the local cider mill or head over to a corn maze. 5. Pick up a new skill.

The last way we’re practicing self-love this September is by picking up a new habit. Many things, like work and classes, begin in September -- but you can take control of these new beginnings by starting your own fun activity. Maybe there’s a class you’ve always wanted to take or a sport you’ve always wanted to try. Or maybe you want to learn to mix your own drinks or pick up a new cooking skill! Whatever it is you’ve been itching to try, give it a go this month. Consider bringing along a friend to make the activity even more enjoyable.

The benefits won’t only be emotional: According to a recent Texan study, picking up new skills strengthens the networks in your brain, meaning you’ll also be engaging and exercising your mind. And by making time for something that you’ve always wanted to do, you’ll practice putting yourself first, thereby practicing even more self-care!

Although we know September can be stressful, we also know that it can be a month full of new beginnings, exciting projects, and the delicious return of fall.
