The Daily Struggle: Lactose Intolerance
Happy Monday! Today started off being a great day! The sun was shining, I surprisingly woke up not tired, and we had ice cream sundaes at lunch. There were three types of ice cream, lots of toppings, and whip cream for days. The only issue is, I am lactose intolerant, but that didn’t stop scooping ice cream into my mouth. Shits about to get real, literally.
Being lactose intolerant is awful when the best things have dairy. Ice cream, cheese, coffee creamer, yogurt -- pretty much anything delicious. I usually take a pill to stop the shits from kicking in, but today I definitely forgot to take that pill. Everything was fine at first. I really thought I was going to escape the bubble guts and horrible digestive process that usually occurs when I eat dairy, but I was wrong.
About 15 minutes after the joys of eating ice cream occurred, the sweat began to surface. My stomach felt like there was a Fourth of July firework display going on inside. I was trying so hard to fight the pains, but I finally gave in. For some reason, I thought I would be able to escape the clutch of diarrhea, but I was sadly mistaken. Luckily I came up with a signal between my one coworker and me for when I need to let the dogs out aka drop a bomb aka blow one out. I literally just look at her dead in the eyes and say “turn it up”, and she blasts the music in the office to drown out the sounds of my dairy disasters.
I know that this is probably TMI for some people, but it’s real. I can’t tell you how many people I know that cannot eat dairy but continue to do so even when their bodies fail them. Medication does help, but sometimes you just forget-- kinda like I did today. My friends and coworkers are great with covering for me when the moment strikes. It’s a natural thing that happens, and if you are someone that constantly has to deal with the struggles of having a dairy allergy, just know that you are NOT alone.
But I need to wrap up this daily struggle because unfortunately, my bowels are failing me once again. About to be screaming “TURN IT UP” in a Lizzo voice real soon. Anyways, if anyone has any suggestions as to how to keep my lactose intolerance in check, by all means, let ya girl know!
