The Weekly Win: Plus Size + Curvy Women Killing It!
It is that time of the week again where we get to celebrate the weekly wins! First, my roommate did not have strep throat! Thought for sure it was a case of strep, but she dodged it--and so did I! The second win is that my house is officially decorated for Fall. I know that some people think it may be too soon, but it is never too soon for pumpkins and joy. Finally, the biggest weekly win is that plus-sized and curvy women are doing the damn thangggg this week!
From being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, to strutting their stuff on the runway at New York Fashion Week, plus size women are KILLING IT. Recently, Missy Elliot was the first female rapper of all time inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. She also was the first female rapper to receive an MTV Video Vanguard Award. These are both huge accomplishments for not only women but for plus size women. She was one of the first artists to fuse rapping and singing-- a style that now dominates the modern rap scene.
Missy Elliot was always an inspiration to me at a young age. Missy is a plus-size woman who achieved career success and also commanded respect. She thrived at a time when the music industry was full of the male gaze and the Britney’s and Christina’s of the world. Missy wrote about sex and things that were not in the spotlight for plus size women. Back then there were never any talks of a plus-size woman being good in bed until Missy wrote about it. She has paved the way for so many artists and women, and she is so deserving of the recognition she has received.
Lizzo is another plus-size artist that is taking the world by storm! Recently, Lizzo’s Truth Hurts claimed the top spot on the Billboard top 100 charts. It still has that same spot after two weeks. She released that song in 2017 and NEVER thought that she would surpass artists on the charts like Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, and more. She did that!! Lizzo spreads the message of self-love, body acceptance, and self-worth. As a plus-size woman, she has already changed the game in the music industry, but also for so many artists to come. Lizzo is a force to be reckoned with. If you haven’t streamed Truth Hurts yet, YOU BETTER. That song could make me wreck my car that’s how good it is.
Now let’s dive into the wins of the fashion industry. Most of you know that New York Fashion Week is going on, but did you know that this Fall had the curviest models and brands represented than any other Fall NYFW? The Fall 2019 shows featured 94 appearances by curve and non-sample-size models. This is news is incredible. It shows that the American Fashion Industry is pushing for diversity and inclusivity which are things that have not been represented on the runway for years.
I remember being so excited when I saw Ashey Graham walk in NYFW for the first time. She took the world by storm. It was a HUGE leap in the right direction for plus size and curvy women to have that type of platform. From there, brands, designers, magazines, and department stores have been integrating more diversity and inclusivity into their brands. Things like diversity and inclusivity do not happen overnight. The curvy women of the world have been fighting for this for a long time. Every milestone counts. We should be celebrating every time that something big like this happens because it just shows that we can only go up from here.
Tess Holliday made a powerful statement on the NYFW runway walking for Chromat. She has always been an advocate for body positivity and inclusivity. Her floor-length dress had the words “Sample Size” written all over it. It was a call out to other brands that typically use sizes 0-4 as their sample size models. The average size of women in the US is a size 14. Brands need to recognize this. It is impactful moments like Tess Holliday had that get people to recognize that inclusivity matters and that there are problems in the fashion industry. Tess’ runway walk is making waves and it is truly so inspiring to curvy and plus size women all around.
To some people, these weekly wins may not seem that big, but for the plus-size community these are the moments that matter most. I cannot wait to see where we are a year from now. Hopefully more Grammys, Hall of Fames, and Runways to celebrate!
